The reason to buy them together is that the parts book treats them as three separate numbers. A shaft ordered on its own arrives as a shaft, with no cross and no joint, and the joint is usually the piece that has failed by the time anyone goes looking.
The shaft is 1 inch square and telescopes from 11-3/4 inches to 25-1/2 inches measured pin center to pin center. The universal joint carries a 1 inch square bore on one side and a 1-1/4 inch round bore on the other, overall length 5.44 inches. The cross is a series 12 unit with 1-1/16 inch caps and an overall length of 2-1/2 inches.
